TitleRecords of University of Birmingham Wages and Establishment Committee
Extent1 volume
Date1944-1956
DescriptionMinutes of a committee initially known as the Establishment and Wages Committee which changed its name to the Wages and Establishment Committee in 1953. Internal evidence suggests that the first meeting of the Committee was held on 24 January 1944. It received Faculty recommendations for new appointments and increases in the wages paid to technical, clerical, and laboratory staff in academic departments.

Membership consisted of the Vice-Chancellor; Treasurer; members of academic staff; and members of administrative staff.

Minutes contain submissions by academic departments giving the names and recommended wage increases of individual members of staff. Discussion about revisions to wage scales and grading; working hours; and terms and conditions of contracts is also recorded. The minutes also include copies of memoranda by University Branch of the Association of Scientific Workers on wages, education, status, and working conditions, and by the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals University Joint Committee on Technical Staffs on salary scales for technicians

The Committee continued to meet for several years after the end of 1956, but no later minutes have been transferred to the University Archives. Surviving records are not the authorised versions but were probably papers kept by the Registrar
