The Committee was able to commission appropriate studies or external advice in relation to aspects of campus life experience that were judged to be strategically in need of attention, and to make recommendations on actions to be taken as a result
Membership consisted of a Pro-Vice-Chancellor (chair); members of staff with expertise or knowledge in areas identified as priorities by the Committee, including up to three academic members of staff, and one other member of staff; three student participants nominated by the Guild of Students; the Director of the Graduate School; the Director of Hospitality and Accommodation Services; the Director of Marketing Services or a representative; the Director of Student Life; the Director of Sport; and the Director or Assistant Director of Estates
The Committee reported to the Senate, but exchanged advice and information with the Strategy, Planning and Resources Committee where this committee had to determine resource-related proposals arising from the Committee's recommendations. Other bodies including committees of Senate, Heads of Budget Centres, Deanery, Fora, student support groups, and Staff Student Liaison Committees were also consulted
Minutes record discussion about developments in the provision of accommodation; supporting student progress and employability; Graduate School activities; Freshers' Week;the University of Birmingham's International Strategy; the University's Teaching and Learning Strategy and its impact on learning support; equality policies on race, gender, and disability; and student support and counselling. Copies of annual reports of the Student Support and Counselling Service are included with the minutes, and minutes of the meeting held on 31 January 2008 also include copies of the University's Employability Strategy; Raymond Priestley Centre Annual Report; and International Student Advisory Service Annual Report. Minutes of the meeting held on 1 February 2007 record discussion of the implementation of the Wellbeing agenda across the University, and include papers relating to counselling and to staff and student personal development. Minutes of the meeting held on 2 May 2007 discuss a proposal to introduce Community Service at the University.
