Minutes are numbered in a single consecutive sequence until the beginning of 1988, when a yearly numbering system was introduced, using the calendar year followed by a consequence numerical sequence beginning from 1 at the start of each year.
Membership of the committee in the first few years of its existence consisted of the Vice-Chancellor, Vice-Principal, and Professors who were also members of Senate. Membership later expanded to include the Public Orators, Pro-Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for Academic Affairs, and other members of Senate. Meetings were usually held twice a year, in January or February, and November and December. By the 1970s meetings were usually held in May and November.
Early minutes give the names and proposers and seconders of nominees, with the title of honorary degree proposed. From the second meeting of the committee, the reasons for recommendations for honorary degrees are also given. From November 1960, nomination papers include a curriculum vitae for each nominee, and minutes from the 1970s onwards include statements of the grounds for nomination as procedures became more formalised.
