| Description | Minutes of a body established to provide a broad-based check on the effectiveness of systems in place within the Schools and across the University in relation to learning and teaching. It gathered information and performance indicators from across the University relating to the previous academic session, and drew together findings for the session and agreed a report for the Academic Board. It was initially known as the Periodic Review, but later became part of the Birmingham Integrated Quality Assurance and Enhancement System in 2003. The Deans' Review took the form of two extended meetings in December and May each year. The first drew together performance indicators, and the second provided a forum for drawing together the outputs of review across the component parts of the Birmingham Integrated Quality Assurance and Enhancement System, and for planning future reviews.
Membership consisted of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Quality and Standards); the Dean of Arts and Social Sciences; the Dean of Life and Health Sciences; the Dean of Physical Sciences and Engineering; the Deputy Dean of Life and Health Sciences; the Deputy Dean of Physical Sciences and Engineering. The Director of Policy Development and the Quality Assurance Manager were also in attendance
The first meeting was held on 30 April 2003, but internal evidence suggests that there was previous Review activity which focused on the academic session 2001-2002
Minutes and supporting papers include feedback of various kinds from the Schools, including student feedback reports; annual reports from Staff Student Committees for the Schools; reports from Schools; minutes of School Teaching Quality Committees; subject reviews; External Examiners reports; Staff Development Unit annual reports; Student Support and Counselling Service annual reports; relevant Corporate Services reports; Academic Quality Unit reports; copies of Quality Assurance Agency Academic Review; papers relating to the National Student Survey; papers relating to the student representation system; and papers relating to peer observation of teaching. There is also information taken from the University Statistical database. The Deans' Review identified examples of good practice and areas of concern, in relation to both internal audits and external reviews.
These records include minutes and supporting papers of Birmingham Integrated Quality Assurance and Enhancement System Interim Deans' Meetings from May 2003 to November 2004 (see UB/COM/143/2). These records are probably the chair's papers, and include committee correspondence and papers which are annotated
Further meetings of the Dean's Review were planned for December 2005 and May 2006 but no further minutes have been transferred to the University Archives. It is possible that the Quality Assurance and Enhancement Committee took over the functions of the Deans's Review when it was established in October 2005 (see UB/COM/15 for minutes of this committee) |
