| Description | Minutes of a committee established by Senate and Council in July 1970. Its terms of reference were to work with the Director of the Appointments Service to formulate policy for the University Appointments Service to provide careers advice and counselling, and to fill appointments and to guide students into placing themselves, and to devise means to implement policy. It was required to report to both the Senate and the Council and was expected to meet at least once a term. The Executive Committee made recommendations through the Committee of Principals and Deans. It would act within the general lines of policy set out by the Appointments Board (see UB/COM/39 for minutes), but could itself discuss how best to implement that policy and make any necessary recommendations
Membership consisted of a member of University Council (chair); the Deputy Principal and the Director of the Appointments Service as ex-officio members; nominated members from each of the Faculties and from the Non-Professorial Staff, the Research Staff Association, the Guild of Graduates, and the Guild of Undergraduates
At its first meeting, the Committee considered a memorandum from the Director of the Appointments Service on the development of the University's careers service and its changing purpose and function , as well as the extension of careers counselling for students. A copy of the memorandum is included with the minutes. One of the recommendations in this memorandum was a change in name from the Appointments Board to the Careers Service, and this was accepted. Other recommendations involved the expansion of the service, and the committee discussed provision for additional accommodation and staff, the development of relationships with academic departments and planning for the Quinquennium 1972-1977 Minutes include copies of annual reports of the Appointments Board (later Careers Board) which contain statistical information about the jobs or careers plans of students after leaving University as well as information about the programme of careers talks offered, and the employers visits programme. Minutes also contain some statistics about graduate unemployment, discussion of the problem of vacation employment, and prospects for graduate employment The Committee discussed the need for additional accommodation for the Careers Service, and and by March 1973 arrangements had been agreed to accommodate the Careers Service in Hornton Grange. The minutes state that this accommodation opened in the summer 1973
Minutes of the meeting held on 7 March 1973 refer to a collaboration between the Careers Service and the Department of Psychology in relation to problems which might affect students' employment prospects. Minutes of the meeting held on 28 November 1973 mention the Guild of Graduates Careers Fair, and there are further references to this event in subsequent years. Minutes of the meeting held on 10 March 1976 include a copy of a report on the Guild of Graduates Careers Fair 1975.
Minutes of the meeting held on 27 November 1974 discuss 'declining prospects for the British economy' and the possibility of career prospects in Europe for British graduates, presumably following the UK's accession to the European Economic Community in 1973. There is further discussion on this point recorded in minutes of the meeting held on 14 May 1975, and a copy of the SCUAS Working Party report on Opportunities for Graduates in Europe is included. Minutes of this meeting also contain notes on the Careers Board and Executive Committee and their relationship to the Careers Service; a report on student consultations and first destinations on graduation 1974-1975 and the Employment Interviews Programme 1976, together with copies of talks given to Careers Board annual meetings
Minutes of the meeting held on 10 March 1976 contain papers which consider problems involved in the transition of graduates from University to employment, as well as recording further discussion about career prospects for British graduates in Europe focusing on parity in qualifications, and copy of report entitled 'Future of the Careers Service Executive Committee' which puts forward suggestions for its functions to be taken over by the Careers Board
The last meeting of the Committee was held on 26 May 1976, and the minutes record discussion about its future. The final report of the Careers Service Executive Committee to the Senate records that the Committee was to be dissolved and an alternative Careers Service/Users forum would be considered with full Faculty and Careers Staff representation, weighted accordingly |
