TitleRecords of University of Birmingham Joint Committee on Post Experience Training
Extent1 volume
Date1973-1975
DescriptionMinutes of a committee established to investigate the feasibility of the proposed development of facilities for post experience training on land east of Edgbaston Park Road. It was responsible for making recommendations concerning both the development and management of these facilities, and used as the basis for its discussion a memorandum entitled 'A proposed centre for Post-Experience Courses', a copy of which is included with minutes of the first meeting of the Committee, held on 15 June 1973

Membership consisted of the Pro-Chancellor (chair); and members of academic and administrative staff. The Vice-Chancellor, Bursar, Registrar, Secretary, and other staff could also attend meetings

Minutes record discussion of the need for developments to be financially viable, especially if buildings were to be constructed, but there is acknowledgement of the need to provide residential accommodation for Health Services Management courses, the expansion of the Institute for Engineering Production by building a new wing to the Lucas Institute, and the need for the expansion of the Institute of Local Government Studies. A Working Party on Post-Experience Training was set up at the first meeting of the Committee, and a copy of the interim report of this Working Party is included with minutes of the meeting held on 11 July 1973
Minutes of the meeting held on 17 September 1973 set out the Committee's recommendations to the Finance and General Purposes Committee for funds to be allocated to the development of Post-Experience Training, including the purchase of Park House, and includes copy of a Review of the prospects for Post-Experience Training

Committee minutes include regular reports of the Co-ordinator, who was responsible for making enquiries into the costs and potential revenue from catering, residential, teaching and office accommodation, and reviewing projects for Post-Experience Training offered by the Institute of Local Government Studies, the Health Services Management Centre, and in other industries and professional sectors including Transportation, Regional Water Authorities, British Gas Corporation, Police, Chemistry, Law, Planning, Post Office, and Museums

Minutes of the meeting held on 24 September 1974 discuss budget forecasts and include supporting reports from the Institute of Local Government Studies, the Health Services Management Centre, the Social Services Unit, and the Institute for Engineering Production. A copy of the Co-ordinator's report on the academic development of training programmes in the areas outlined in previous reports is included, together with a paper on a possible building programme

Subsequent meetings of the Committee contain Co-ordinator's reports; reports to the Finance and General Purposes Committee; financial forecasts; and viability statements on the completion of the building programme

By the time of the meeting held on 16 October 1974, it appears that the focus was on Post-Experience training courses for senior personnel in Engineering Production and related management studies; Local Government administration; Health Services Management; Traffic Engineering and related Planning; and Social Welfare Administration
Committee minutes include a copy of the report of the Post-Experience Training Committee to the Finance and General Purposes Committee dated 19 February 1975 recommending the allocation of resources for residential facilities at Garth House and Park House, subject to approval by the Planning and Priorities Committee
There is an agenda and supporting papers for the meeting held on 5 May 1975 but minutes of this meeting are not present. No further minutes of this Committee have been transferred to the University Archives. It is possible that its functions were taken over by the Financial sub-committee for Post-Experience Activities (see UB/COM/45)
