| Description | Minutes of a committee established by Senate and Council to be responsible for the ethical conduct of research. Although the Committee was principally concerned with scientific research, some aspects of its work could be applicable to research outside the science-based disciplines. It was the intention that the Committee would complement rather than duplicate the work of ethical committees within Schools or the NHS. The Committee's work was informed by the Code of Conduct for Research as a general framework, copies of which are included in the minutes. Schools were expected to review their own research processes against the Code
Membership consisted of a lay member of and appointed by Council; and two academic members appointed by Senate, normally to include the Pro-Vice-Chancellor responsible for Research
The Committee's remit included sources of research funding; scientific fraud; dealing with 'whistle blowing'; the use of students for teaching, and the use of students and of others by students as subjects of research; conscientious objection; and appeals procedures. It also had a role in raising awareness about, and as a source of advice concerning ethical issues among staff and students. It also had oversight of the Biomedical Ethical Review Sub-Committee
Minutes include papers relating to the development of the Code of Practice on Research Ethics and Conduct to co-ordinate and develop training 1999-2000
It is not clear whether the Committee continued to meet after June 2001. There are supporting papers for the Committee, dated November 2001, but no further records have been transferred to the University Archives |
