| Description | Minutes of a committee appointed on the recommendation of the Computer Executive Committee to have control of policy and finance related to computer services in the Faculty of Medicine and United Birmingham Hospitals. Membership of this joint committee consisted of representatives from both the University of Birmingham and the United Birmingham Hospitals.
It is possible that the meeting held on 28 June 1967 was the first of the committee. These minutes include a copy of the Progress Report from the Computer Executive Committee which gives details about the Computer Service, Work in Progress, contains the report of the Computer Services Committee, and proposals for computer services at the Birmingham Teaching Hospitals Centre, as well as a separate report entitled 'A Staged Functionsl Specification of Computer Requirements' by E. G. Knox prepared for the Medical Computer Services Executive Committee
Minutes discuss reliability of the machine, accommodation for computer staff, finance and upgrading of computer equipment
Minutes of the meeting held on 27 September 1967 include a cpy of a report on the progress of discussions with the Ministry of Health concerning the specification and approval of the future computer installation at Birmingham Teaching Hospials Centre, and minutes of the meeting held on 1 February 1968 contain a copy of the application to the Ministry of Health for approval in principle of computer services to meet the needs of the Teaching Hospital and associated Medical School. Further papers relating to this are included with minutes of the meeting held on 26 March 1968 and 21 June 1968
Minutes of the meeting held on 9 July 1969 contain a copy of the Queen Elizabeth Medical Centre Computer Project Progress Report, and set out recommendations for the future role and constitution of the Committee. Responsibility for servicing the Committee was to transfer from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry to the United Birmingham Hospitals, but the Committee would remain in its capacity to preserve continuity and the link between the Hospital and the University. Computer staff would eventually transfer from the University to the hospital, and the computer installation would be transferred to the Centre Site as soon as accommodation became available. Members of University Staff making a substantial and continuing contribution to the Hospital Computer Services and who did not already hold Hospital appointments were to be given suitable appointments These statements suggest that the Committee continued to meet but that, as it was now serviced by the United Birmingham Hospitals, minutes may not have been routinely retained by the University of Birmingham, and this might explain why no further minutes have been transferred to the University Archives. It is possible that minutes of the Board of the Faculty of Medicine might contain references to the work of the Medical Centre Computer Project |
