| Description | Records of a Board of Examinations set up as part of a scheme whereby the University of Birmingham acted in co-operation with the Training College of Saltley, Selly Park, Dudley, and Hereford in the examination of students for the certificate previously conducted by the Board of Education. Certificates in the Midland area were issued by the Joint Board, with the endorsement of the Board of Education. It also acted in co-operation with St Peter's College at Peterborough until its closure in 1938, and with colleges in Leicester in the 1940s.
Membership of the Board of Examinations consisted of representatives of the University comprising the Vice-Chancellor (ex officio); the Heads of the Departments of English, History, Geography, Education, Mathematics, and three other representatives appointed by the Senate; the Principals of the Training Colleges; one member of the teaching staff from each Training College, to be elected annually by the College; and two representatives of the Local Authorities for the Midland Area. It was understood that the Board of Education would arrange for the presence of their officers at the meetings of the Board and its Boards, and notices of the Agenda were sent to such officers Membership of the Boards of Studies consisted of one representative from each College, and one representative appointed by the University, for each subject in which the Board of Education did not propose to examine.
The functions of the Joint Board were to consider the general scheme of studies and approve syllabuses covering the courses of study and studies proposed by the Board; to appoint internal and external examiners; to determine the pay of external examiners; to publish the names of students awarded certificates; to issue certificates for distinction or merit; and to make any other regulations for the proper conduct of the examinations. The Boards of Studies drafted syllabuses of work in each subject; nominated internal and external examiners; and made representations as to the conduct of the examinations, for the approval of the Joint Board
Records consist of minute books containing signed minutes of meetings; report books containing typed copies of agendas, minutes, reports, notices and circular correspondence, and reports of Boards of Studies; a series of Boards of Studies reports for subjects examined; examination papers for 1939, 1946 and 1947; and financial records
The last meeting of the Joint Board was held on 29 July 1947. From 1 October 1947, its responsibilities were taken over by the University of Birmingham Institute of Education, and its funds were transferred
