| Description | Minutes and papers of a Committee appointed for the management of the Dynamitron Accelerator to be installed at the Edgbaston campus of the University of Birmingham for the joint use of the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham College of Advanced Technology, later the University of Aston. Its responsibilities were to exercise scientific and financial control of the Dynamitron project; to recommend the appointment of a Manager and staff for the project; to report annually on the progress, staffing and finance of the project to the Senates of both institutions, with copies for information to the Radiation Centre Committee at the University of Birmingham and the corresponding technical committee at Aston; and to consult with the Radiation Centre Committee, especially in respect of the use of buildings, staff and services provided by the University of Birmingham from sources other than the Science Research Council grant

Minutes of the Committee contain information about the appointment of the Dynamitron Manager; the Dynamitron specifications; accommodation requirements and details of plans for the building in which would house the Dynamitron; details about the estimated operating expenditure and staff requirements; discussion about financing the project and copies of financial reports once the Dynamitron was installed; progress reports once the Dynamitron was installed; discussion and review of applications to Science Research Council and copies of some applications; details about staffing with the names of some staff included; copies of Director's reports on the Dynamitron project; correspondence from the Science Research Council; and discussion of departmental maintenance and equipment grants. The minutes also include copies of reports to the Senates of both institutions.
Minutes of meetings held in 1966 include papers concerning the joint submission to the Science Research Council for the provision of a Dynamitron accelerator, and minutes of the meeting held on 2 February 1967 include a copy of the proposal for a Dynamitron Accelerator for the University of Birmingham and the University of Aston, compiled by Birmingham Radiation Centre. Minutes of the meeting held on 2 March 1966 include a copy of a report on visits to other laboratories, and discussions with academic staff at other institutions in relation to the provision of a high current electron accelerator

Minutes of the meeting held on 14 March 1969 include a copy of notes by the Director of the Radiation Centre for the meeting of the Joint Dynamitron Management Committee on the construction and delivery of the Dynamitron, its storage, final installation in the Radiation Centre, and staffing required. The records also comprise a set of papers of the Joint Dynamitron Committee relating to an application to the Equipment Committees of the Universities of Birmingham and Aston in 1970 for laboratory and other equipment in order for Dynamitron project work to take place (see UB/COM/158/3) Minutes of meetings held in 1970 and 1971 contain papers on the Dynamitron testing programme, and minutes of the meeting held on 3 February 1972 include a copy of the Director's first report which explains that the Dynamitron was not fully operational until 1971. Reports of the Director are included with minutes on a regular basis after this date. Minutes of the meeting held on 21 March 1975 include a copy of the Dynamitron Accelerator Progress Report for 1974
Minutes of the meeting held on 30 November 1981 refer to the establishment of a Task Force by the Academic Planning Committee at the University of Aston to review the University's policy to the Dynamitron project following the transfer of responsibility on behalf of the University to the Department of Physics, which resulted in a change in the Aston representation on the Committee. Minutes of the meeting held on 27 May 1982 include a report on the constitution and terms of reference of the Joint Dynamitron Management Committee Minutes of the meeting held on 18 May 1983 refer to the withdrawal of the University of Aston from the Dynamitron project due to financial circumstances. The future of the project was to be discussed by the Faculty of Science and Engineering General Purposes Committee. The Joint Dynamitron Management Committee was disbanded, and the final report of the Committee presented to the Senates of both institutions in March 1984 |
