| Description | Minutes and supporting papers of the Research Sub-Committee from November 2002 to May 2005. Minutes are mostly confirmed and some are signed. Minutes are numbered in a yearly numbering system, using the calendar year followed by a consequential numerical sequence beginning from 1 at the start of each year.
The committee was established to oversee the development and implementation of the University's Research Strategy; to establish benchmarks and targets for research performance and subsequently to monitor performance against these benchmarks; to oversee the University's research audit process; to promote good research management structures and processes within the University; to propose and oversee external audits of research activity within Schools; and to co-ordinate and manage strategically the University's response to research funding opportunities requiring a central overview. Through its Working Groups it developed and oversaw strategies and action plans relating to particular modes of research activity. It also dealt with other matters referrs to it by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research or by the Strategy, Planning and Resources Committee.
Membership consisted of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Transfer), the Vice-Principal; Chairs of the three Deanery working groups; one other member of each of the three Deanery working groups; the Chairs of the thematic working groups' one lay and one academic member of University Council; the Director of Research and Enterprise Services or a representative; the Director of Finance or a representative; the Managing Director of Birmingham Research and Development Limited or a representative; and the Assistant Director (Research Planning and Policy), Research and Enterprise Services.
Deanery working groups assist Sub-Committee in the development and implementation of University's Research Strategy. Thematic working groups develop and oversee strategy and action plan for the promotion and facilitation of applied research, interdisciplinary research and European funding

Minutes and supporting papers contain discussion of actions following the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2001; the joint funding bodies review of research assessement in higher education; developments in strategic infrastructure funding in research; the University's Strategic Development Fund and the development of the research strategy. Minutes include copies of reports from working groups and copies of strategic research reviews of Schools and departments, as well as copies of reports setting out the University response on proposed research assessment methodology, 2003. There are also papers on the research councils' academic fellowship scheme and on the award of University and Academic Fellowship schemes, 2004. The minutes contain discussion of the RAE 2008 and of research performance reviews carried out in preparation for this research assessment exercise.
The intention was for meetings to be held in November 2005, February 2006 and May 2006 but it was noted in minutes of the meeting held in May 2005 that if the Sub-Committee's remit was extended, the number and timing of meetings would need to be reviewed. However, no later minutes have been transferred to the University Archives |
