TitleRecords of University of Birmingham Investment committee
Extent2 volumes
Date1979-2016
DescriptionMinutes of the committee listed in the printed University Calendars as a sub-committee of the Finance and General Purposes committee, appointed to examine the University's portfolio of investments.

Membership consisted of the Treasurer, Deputy Treasurer, a lay member of Council, and an academic member of Senate. The Secretary, Finance Officer, and other University officers also attended. The sub-committee usually meets twice a year and became a sub-committee of the Strategy, Planning, and Resources committee

Minutes contain information about short-term investments, investment in student housing and other property investments, and include reports of Investment Managers, figures showing the distribution and valuation of Investment Pool shares, lists of transactions, Portfolio valuations, summaries of changes in investments, and projected economic and stockmarket outlook.

Minutes of the meeting held on 12 November 1986 include a proposal submitted by the Institute of Research and Development/Birmingham Research and Development Ltd (BRDL) for funds from the Investment committee available for use at the discretion of the Birmingham Research and Development Ltd Board, to be used to become self-financing within five years by generating sufficient income to finance continuing investment in new ventures and to make a profit for the University. BRDL was managing the Research Park which had been conceived as a link between the University and the outside world, to commercialise good academic developments, and to encourage industry to come to the University for cooperation in developing its own ideas.

There is a gap in surviving minutes of the Investment committee between May 1988 and December 1989
