DescriptionSigned minutes of a committee appointed to 'consider the short term problems arising from the administration of those activities which are the direct responsibility of the Council', but primarily to discuss interim arrangements for the representation of non-professorial staff and students on Council and its committees, following student unrest in 1968 resulting from the University's perceived delay in broadening representation on its governing bodies, and the institution's recognition that changes were needed

Membership of the committee consisted of the Vice-Chancellor as chair; representatives nominated by Council and Senate; and representatives nominated by the Non-Professorial Staff and the Guild of Undergraduates

The committee met in May, June, July, and September 1969, but there seem to have been no more meetings until a final one in June 1970 which reviewed the interim arrangements

The committee discussed non-professorial staff and student representation on Halls of Residence and Refectory committees and other committees which dealt with business directly affecting the student body; the representation of the newly-formed Research Staff Association and the relationship between the Research Staff Association and the Non-Professorial Staff Association. Minutes of the meeting held on 23 June 1969 include papers setting out the views of the chairs of Council committees on arrangements for the representation of students and non-professorial staff, and the views of the Guild of Undergraduates on the status of student representatives. These minutes also record concerns about confidentiality and give the views of committee members and of students. They also include papers relating to the constitution of the Research Staff Association, a memorandum from the Non-Professorial Staff Executive Committee, and a paper on student representation presented at an emergency meeting of Guild Council
Minutes of the meeting held on 7 July 1969 include a copy of the committee's report to Council on interim arrangements for the representation of students and non-professorial staff on Council and its committees. Minutes of the meeting held on 17 September 1969 include a report to Council on confidentiality of proceedings

There appear to have been no meetings between September 1969 and 16 June 1970. Minutes of this presumably final meeting review the interim arrangements and include a copy of a paper by the Guild of Undergraduates entitled 'Problems in University Government: Some Considerations' and a copy of Joint Statement from the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals and the National Union of Students dated October 1968 which addresses student participation in University decision-making
