| Description | The Higher Degrees Committee was established, together with the First Degrees committee (see UB/COM/58) in February 1990. It was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, and membership consisted of the Vice-Principal; two Pro-Vice-Chancellors; one member of academic staff nominated by each Faculty Board; three members of Senate appointed by Senate; and the President and Vice-President of the Guild of Students. A member of the Careers Service also attended The committee's terms of reference were to consider and act with the delegated authority of Senate on proposals for new higher degrees and to monitor the content and appropriateness of higher degrees offered by the University The first meeting, held on 6 February 1990, was a joint meeting with the First Degrees committee.
Minutes discuss arrangements for monitoring academic standards and student consultation, and include copies of a draft student questionnaire on course content, guidance, quality and style of teaching, assessment; code of practice for postgraduate training and research; reports on thesis submission rates; reports from Faculty Boards relating to the structure of taught postgraduate programmes which include details about programmes at Newman-Westhill College in the reports of the Board of the Faculty of Education and Continuing Studies. The meeting held on 20 February 1991 discussed matters concerning the Academic Audit and includes reports of the Scrutiny Teams and Faculty Reports on the general and in-depth reviews carried out. Minutes of this meeting are filed with minutes of the First Degrees committee at UB/COM/58/3
The Higher Degrees committee was merged with the First Degrees committee in June 1991 into a new committee to be called the Academic Board of Senate (see UB/COM/60 for minutes) |
