TitleRecords of University of Birmingham Computers Technical sub-committee
Extent3 volumes
Date1965-1982
DescriptionMinutes of a committee constituted as a sub-committee of the University Committee on Computers to advise that committee on the configuration, application, and utilisation of computer resources in the University, dating from the end of 1965 to July 1974, and from May 1981 to September 1982

The first meeting was held on 22 December 1965, and the sub-committee met initially at least termly, though by the early 1970s meetings took place around three times a year

Minutes held in 1966 discuss matters relating to the implementation of the Flowers Report and contain descriptions of additional computer equipment to be provided at the University, discussion of structural alterations required, and assessments of departmental computer requirements. Minutes typically include information about the current computer facilities at the University, as well as discussion and supporting papers about future developments including the proposed installation of new equipment. Minutes also contain financial statements; reports of the Computer Users' sub-committee; Quinquennial proposals; information about the running costs of equipment; specifications for new computer equipment according to the requirements of different departments, including inventories of equipment in different departments; and discussion about the configuration of computers. There are also copies of applications by academic staff for research grants for projects which give details of the academic work and the computer equipment required, as well as occasional comment comparing computer equipment in other Higher Education institutions following visits by members of the sub-committee.

The sub-committee continued to meet between 1974 and 1981, and after the date of the last meeting recorded in this sequence, though no minutes after September 1982 survive as a discrete set. Reports of the Technical sub-committee from 1974 to 1989 can be found with minutes of the University Committee on Computers (see UB/COM/69)
