| Description | This series contains two volumes of minutes; one of which contains only a sequence of minutes of the Television Technical Sub-Committee later renamed the Educational Technology Sub-Committee, from its establishment in 1967 up to 1970. The second volume contains minutes of the Educational Technology Sub-Committee from 1970 to 1974, as well as minutes of various other sub-committees which reported to the Television Committee/Committee on Educational Technology between 1967 and 1974
The Television Technical Sub-Committee was convened to advise on all technical aspects concerning television and related techniques in the University, with the exception of the Language Laboratories. It reported to the Television Committee, later renamed the Committee on Educational Technology. Minutes of this sub-committee contain detailed information about television, film and recording equipment, including specifications, costs, and descriptions of use, as well as reports of visits and demonstrations, and information about equipment in other universities; appointments of technicians; charges for services, and the future planning of services. Some of the supporting papers with these minutes are also included with minutes of the Television/Committee on Educational Technology (see UB/COM/77)
Records contained in the second volume in this series consist of minutes of the Television and Film Production Sub-Committee, established in 1972 as a new committee responsible for resolving short and medium term priorities in the use of these media and in evolving working rules on such matters as copyright, the loan of video tapes and films to outside organisations and inter-University co-operation. These minutes include papers on rights in recorded educational material; charges for the lease of video tapes; publicity for programmes available; the use of television in teaching; the future role of the Unit; and the work of the Unit for outside bodies
Finally, this volume also contains minutes of the Language Laboratories Sub-Committee, renamed the Language Laboratories Users' Sub-Committee in 1972. The first meeting of this committee was held on 26 May 1967, and it was responsible for planning the development of language laboratory work in the University, for maintaining regular surveillance over the efficiency of the working of the language laboratories, and for co-ordinating the activities of those working in this field and so for informing and making recommendations to the University Television Committee on technical and pedagogic developments; the provision and operation of language laboratory equipment; the formulation of policy governing the day to day administration and operation of the laboratories; and co-ordination of the exploitation of technical facilities in the University. It was also responsible for identifying needs and possibilities for initiating research on course-construction and language laboratory teaching methods and co-ordinating and extending such research Minutes of this committee discuss finance and staffing; the transfer of the language laboratories to what became the Muirhead Tower and future developments there; equipment requirements and specifications and the use of equipment by outside bodies. Minutes of the meeting held on 8 June 1980 include the report of the Language Laboratory supervisor covering the move to the Muirhead Tower, equipment, staffing, finance, and use. Meetings in subsequent years include annual reports of the supervisor. Minutes of the meeting held on 17 January 1972 note the reconstitution of the committee as the Language Laboratories Users' Sub-Committee, with some of the same responsibilities, though staffing and technical matters were now dealt with by the Educational Technology Sub-Committee, and the Director of the Television Service was now a full member of the Sub-Committee |
