TitleRecords of University of Birmingham Committee on the Future of the Hayter Centres
Extent1 volume
Date1972
DescriptionMinutes of a committee set up with terms of reference to consider the most suitable arrangements for the future administration of the two Hayter Centres, funded by the University Grants Committee; the Centre of West African Studies and the Centre for Russian and East European Studies. The committee was responsible for recommending whether they should continue to be administered by Senate Committees, or whether they should be absorbed into the Faculty system, or another arrangement

The future administration of the two Centres had been raised because at the end of the quinquennium (1967-1972) the special provision of the University Grants Committee of Hayter earmarked funds would end, with the assimilation of these funds into University general funds, and the Review Body appointed by Council to consider the role, constitution and functioning of the University had recommended that these Centres should become departments of a Faculty of Social Studies. These matters were discussed by both the Centre of West African Studies Committee and the Committee on Russian and Eastern European Studies (see UB/COM/67 and UB/COM/68 for minutes)

Membership consisted of four members appointed by the Senate; two members nominated by the Committee of the Centre of West African Studies, and two members nominated by the Committee on Russian and East European Studies

Minutes include a preliminary notice to committee members dated March 1972, before minutes of meetings from 26 May 1972 to the end of the year. Minutes of this first meeting include a large amount of information about the Centre of West African Studies, including its development, general organisation, finance, and future development. Copies of annual reports of the Centre of West African Studies for 1969-1970 and 1970-1971 are included with papers relating to the preliminary notice to committee members. Minutes of the next meeting, held on 6 June 1972, contain substantial information about the Centre for Russian and East European Studies, as well as copies of the reply to the Review Body by the two Directors of the Hayter Centres setting out the reasons for their opposition to proposals to incorporate the Centres into a Faculty of Social Studies

Minutes of the meeting held on 23 June 1972 discuss the relationship of the Centres with the Faculties, and include submissions by members of staff in the Centres. Minutes of the next meeting, held on 27 October 1972, include a copy of the report of the Committee on the Future of the Hayter Centres, setting out the considerations of the committee, and its deliberations, and recording the recommendation that the administration of the Centres continued under the current arrangements
The final meeting was held on 13 December 1972, and the minutes include a copy of the revised draft report of the Committee to the Senate
