Administrative HistoryThis committee was initially known as the Grants and Welfare Fund committee. It was established for the 1948-1949 academic session and was a standing committee of the Guild. During the following academic session the committee was broken down into the Vice-Chancellor's Loan Fund committee and the Grants and Welfare committee, both administering the award of loans and grants to students experiencing financial hardship. The functions of the Vice Chancellor's Loan Fund committee appears to have been taken over by the newly established University Loan Fund committee from February 1950, and by the mid 1950s it was dealing with problems and policies concerning the grant awarding system as well as issues relating to fees, and with general undergraduate welfare matters. By 1956-1057 the fund appears to have been virtually exhausted, and the policy of awarding loans and grants was centralised under the control of the Registrar. The Grants and Welfare committee had the opportunity of submitting appropriate cases to the University as they arose. The Welfare committee seems to have continued this work during the 1970s and possibly afterwards, though the chair appears to have delegated some aspects of the role to Welfare sub-committees including finance, accommodation, services and health. The Welfare committee also ran the Emergency Grant fund. The Welfare committee chair sat on the Guild Executive committee.
