TitleFreshmen's Conference Handbooks
Extent18 items
Date1949-1966
DescriptionIncomplete set of handbooks issued to freshmen students by the Guild. The publication was intended to serve as a Freshers supplement to the Guild Handbook but early copies consist entirely of the text of the Vice Chancellor's 'message to freshmen', with a loose insert giving details of events held during the conference, the first of which had been held in 1948. From 1952 the handbooks become more comprehensive, containing information about the Guild and its services and facilities; fixed pages containing the conference programme; a special message to women freshers; a list of student societies, and descriptions of sports opportunities; Guild Theatre Group and University Debating Society, as well as information about the University Health Service . Much of the general information about the Guild can also be found in the Guild handbooks, see UB/GUILD/E/3, though there are no holdings for the start of the period covered by the Freshmen's Conference handbooks. In 1954, the Guild Handbook was published bi-annually with an annual revision; the Freshers' Handbook emphasised the current conference and was published at the commencement of every session. Freshmen's Conference materials for 1969 and 1971 consist only of copies of the conference programme, although the 1971 programme includes other materials sent to freshers.
