Description | The bulk of the section consists of incomplete sequences of student magazines and newspapers, from the first issue of Mason College Magazine to contemporary issues of Redbrick. These constitute an incredibly rich resource for the study of the student experience, from the perspective of the Guild of Students. Publications generally express the official Guild policy but also allow dissenting opinions to be reported. Other records consist of official Guild news sheets from the 1960s to the 1990s which include listings, and provide a snapshot of the social and cultural scene in Birmingham and at the university during this period. In addition, occasional publications of Guild committees, largely dating from the 1980s but including some produced during the 1960s, and miscellaneous publications comprising literary, news and satirical magazines, together with programmes and brochures for Guild events, complement the long runs of student magazines and newspapers. Taken together, these records provide much information about student societies and social activities, and with news from the University and from the city of Birmingham and its southern suburbs give an indication of the wide ranging student experience of life in Birmingham from the late nineteenth century onwards
Pdf indexes for issues of Guild News and Redbrick from September 1958 to July 1963 are available. See links at collection level UB/GUILD |
