Description | This section consists of a large number of photographs of Guild officers and Guild events, the majority of which comprise sequences of official group photographs of members of Guild Council and Guild sports teams. Other photographs were taken to document high profile events such as Stanley Baldwin's visit to the University in 1927, and Queen Elizabeth II's visit in 2000, or to provide a record of Carnival processions or Guild formal events. There are also a number of photographs of a more miscellaneous nature which were probably originally used in Redbrick or other Guild publications or promotional events.
Few photographs date before the 1920s, with the exception of some group portraits of Guild Council members. Earlier photographs of members of Guild committees are reproduced in Mason College Magazine, University of Birmingham Magazine and Mermaid, UB/GUILD/F/1-3. For the interwar period there are a number of photographs of Guild sports teams and Guild Council members, and a photograph album compiled to mark the opening of the new Guild of Undergraduates building at Edgbaston. The 1940s and 1950s are particularly rich in photographic coverage of Carnival processions in Birmingham city centre, and there are also a small number of photographs of formal events. Photographs taken during the 1960s and 1970s are largely miscellaneous, with the exception of the continuing sequence of Guild Council group portraits which ends in 1982. The only other photographs from the final decades of the twentieth century are a set of Carnival photographs from 1981; photographs of Guild officers from the 1987-1998 academic session, and a set of photographs of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh during their visit to the University in 2000. |
