| Description | Records relating to the administrative management of students at the University of Birmingham, containing personal and academic information about students. These records consist of registers; lists and registration forms; record cards; and correspondence files. They were kept by central university administration, by administrative and academic staff in the faculties or groups of university departments, and also by administrative and academic staff in individual academic departments. The records document the matriculation and enrolment of students, personal and academic progress, fees paid to attend university, the results of examinations, and graduation. Some records include reports by staff on academic progress and on student character and behaviour, and some record include testimonials for students.
These records are an important research resource for tracing individual students who attended the University of Birmingham and can contain valuable information about their identity, background, subjects studied, and academic record but they are also a significant source for the study of the student demographic at the institution including social background of students, their nationality, gender and ethnicity
Although this section comprises an extensive set of student records, it is not a comprehensive or complete set of all student records created by the University of Birmingham. There are known gaps in the records within surviving record sequences and it is likely that there were other sets of student records, particularly at Faculty and academic department level, which have either not survived or have not so far been transferred to the University Archives |

| Access Conditions | There are restrictions on access to some parts of this set of records. Some files and some sets of student record cards have been closed under the terms of Data Protection regulations because they contain personal information about individuals. 'Closed' records are indicated as such in the catalogue |
