| Description | These records were kept by staff in the Faculties to record information about students during the course of their studies from matriculation to graduation. There are also some records kept by staff in the Faculty of Medicine at Mason Science College, the University's predecessor, and some record series kept by staff in the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Law which include correspondence with and information about students after their graduation. It is likely that they were kept to supplement the central administrative records described at UB/STU/A and any surviving records that were kept by individual academic departments, described at UB/STU/C. For staff in the Faculties, having another set of student records, kept locally, would have made the administrative and academic functions and activities of the Faculties easier. In some cases, the records kept at Faculty level are more detailed than those kept centrally.
Records were kept in different format, comprising registers, lists, record cards, and files on individual students. They have been arranged by series by Faculty, and within series according to their format. Significant series of records survive for some Faculties, while there is very little surviving material from other Faculties. It is likely that all Faculties kept records about students, though probably in different formats depending on the requirements of each Faculty. Survival of records and subsequent transfer to the University Archives will depend on record keeping practices in different Faculties.
Records of the Faculty of Arts comprise register of undergraduates 1900-1906, examination register 1939-1953, and student record cards 1947-1961. Records of the Faculty of Commerce and Social Science comprise register of undergraduates 1903-1904, attendance registers 1919-1924 and 1941-1949, and student record cards 1967-1981. Records of the Faculty of Education comprise student registers 1906-1938 and 1910-1951, files for individual students 1923-1959, examination results for students at consituent colleges of the Department of Education 1929-1967, student lists 1931-1950, 1936-1953 and 1938, 1947-1980, student record cards for students at constituent colleges 1951-1977, and papers including student lists relating to the Diploma of Higher Education in Practical Theology, 1996-1997. Records of the Faculty of Law comprise student registers 1923-1965, files for individual students 1937-1968, and student lists 1924-1980, 1978-1984, and 2003-2007. Records of the Faculty of Medicine comprise student registers 1892-1929, 1900-1905, 1900-1934 and 1892-1929, statistics about student numbers 1920-1952, registration forms 1942-1966, examination lists 1927-1948, 1927-1977 and 1932-1938, record cards 1926-1983, 1919-1957, 1930-1941 and 1933-1961, and lists of dental students 1952-1956. Records of the Faculty of Science comprise registers of undergraduates 1900-1906
There is also a series of student registers kept by the combined Faculties of Science, Arts, and Commerce to record income from class fees between 1900 and 1935 which continue the series kept at Mason Science College (see UB/MC/F/6). Registers for the same purpose were kept separately by the Faculty of Medicine and are described at UB/STU/B/5/1/3. |
