| Description | These records were kept by staff in academic departments to record information about students in those departments during their studies and, in some cases, after their graduation. They were presumably kept to supplement the central administrative records and any Faculty level records that were kept, and having another set of student records, kept locally, probably made the functions and activities of administrative and academic staff within individual academic departments easier.
It is likely that most academic departments kept some form of records about students but only a small proportion of these have been transferred to the University Archives, from a small number of academic departments. There are attendance registers kept by the Botany Department 1905-1928, student and graduate registers and student record cards kept by the Civil Engineering Department 1905-1999, student registers kept by the Mechanical Engineering Department 1905-1961, student record cards kept by the Music Department 1960-1974, student record cards kept by the Philosophy Department 1963-1979, records of student marks kept by the Physics Department 1920-1927, attendance registers, student lists, student record cards and examination lists for students in the Malting and Brewing later Biochemistry Department 1908-1986, class and examination registers kept by the History Department 1931-1946, and student register kept by the Chemistry Department 1927-1937 |
