DescriptionThis scrapbook contains material generated during Barker's work with Professor Melvin Calvin at the Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley, University of California, from August to December 1955 which resulted in the research publication 'Intermediates in the photosynthetic cycle'. The scrapbook contains a copy of this paper together with correspondence from Melvin Calvin, the University of California, and the Rockefeller Foundation; a pamphlet explaining the work of the Radiation Laboratory; photographs of the voyage to America with souvenir menu from the Queen Mary; several letters from Barker to his parents, his brother Philip, who was a chemical engineer, and other family members describing his trip; photographs of New York, including Professor Heidelberger's apartment; photographs of Buffalo New York, Niagara Falls, Chicago, Berkeley, San Francisco, and other locations in California; photographs of friends and colleagues at the Radiation Laboratory; and a pamphlet giving information about nuclear research being carried out at the University of California. The correspondence and photographs, in particular, provide information about the nature of Barker's work in California, and also give details about his life there, and his sightseeing visits.
