TitleGordon Bottomley Silverdale, Carnforth, to Josephine Nicoll
Extent1 item
Date1 November 1938
DescriptionThanks her for her letter. Is sorry that they did not meet on their European trip. The French army was mobilised in Paris. Went on to Milan, Venice and Dalmatia. Heard of the Munich talks while in Dubrovnik. On their return they planned to visit May Morris at Kelmscott but she died on the day of their proposed meeting. Lascelles Abercrombie has also died, ten days after taking tea with them and Edmund Blunden at his Merton College rooms. The Goldsmith Readership at Oxford vacant: Nicoll would probably fail to obtain it, preference being given to younger UK- based academics
