Extent4 files
DescriptionNotes and other written material relating to Dorothy Hobson's work in the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies media 'sub-group'. Sub-groups were research groups, often established by students, that ran in parallel to the Centre's MA course, on which Hobson studied. Hobson became increasingly interested in the media in the late 1970s and the relationship between popular cultural forms such as soap operas and working class audiences. This culminated in 1982 with the publication of Hobson's 'Crossroads', a study of the then-popular soap opera. The papers include seminar notes, position papers and schedules relating to the media sub-group, in which Hobson was active alongside figures such as David Morley and Hazel Downing. The focus of many of the papers here are on the media group's work on 'light entertainment' and quiz shows
